While others idle in beach traffic, we’re zipping less than an hour away to the banks of the Monocacy River to explore what’s new (and old) in Frederick, a picturesque Maryland market town established in 1745.

Hang your hat at Stone Manor Country Club. Survey the 114-acre estate from the balcony of the Laurel suite, one of the rooms in the original 18th-century home. Hill House Bed and Breakfast is a top choice for travelers eager to test Market Street gastropubs such as Firestone’s or Brewer’s Alley.

INVEST
Spend Saturday (9 a.m.-4 p.m.) or Sunday (noon-4 p.m.) unearthing treasures at a supersize monthly tag sale organized by Chartreuse & Co, a consortium of vintage housewares dealers who stage booths like living Pinterest pages. A two-story barn strewn with chandeliers hosts seasoned vendors such as Madison & Mabel, Cirque, and The Kramer Angle; another sells used furniture.

Sixteen other merchants set up shop on the lawn. Fancy a kitchen island topped with floor board salvaged from a bowling alley? It’s here, as are trinkets like silver-plated trophies, engraved tumblers, and party hats.

INGEST
Midday eats come courtesy of well-known resident Bryan Voltaggio. The Top Chef finalist crafts sandwiches at Lunchbox with the same fine ingredients used at Volt, his destination restaurant five blocks away.

Have more time? Wait for a table at Voltaggio’s newest — an extravagant diner called Family Meal (880 North East Street). Chicken pot pie fritters, tempura frog’s legs with chili and lime and breakfast-for-dinner items like duck confit poutine compete for your appetite.

Three days later, roll home.
