We’ve already taken ice cream and pizza to their highest forms, and now SF is elevating the sandwich beyond cold cuts and white bread. Here are six sandos to try come lunch hour.
The Golden West: Barbecued Short Rib
Dennis Leary’s long-awaited follow-up to The Sentinel is finally in lunchtime swing. Dig into this massive pile of tender, tangy meat, caramelized onions, and a dollop of mayo on a warm seeded bun or crisp focaccia (pictured).
Goody Goodie Cream & Sugar: Stracciatella, Melon, and Microbasil
We know it makes damn good cookies, but this new bakery window in SoMa dishes out two seasonal sandwiches daily. For this version, the creamy Italian cheese is served on a house-made roll.
Citizen’s Band: Fish ’n’ Chips
The new lunch menu features this indulgent combo served open-face on grilled levain: beer-battered California rock cod, fries, malt vinegar aioli, and mixed baby lettuces.
Zaytoon: Falafel Deluxe
As if the falafel wasn’t enough on its own, the eggplant and potatoes add heartiness to the bright tomato salad, parsley, and tahini, all wrapped in warm lavash.
Lunch Geek: New-School Pastrami
This A+ take on the pastrami sandwich is loaded with Swiss cheese, mayo, mixed greens, tomato, and “geek” sauce (garlicky aioli) on your choice of six breads.
Local Mission Eatery: Chicken Salad
Locally sourced chicken, peaches, golden raisins, and purslane between thick-cut slices of grilled bread take this sando to the next level. Wash it down with fresh lemonade.
