With cake now showing up in ball, pop, and ’wich forms, a simple cupcake feels like old news.
Which is why American Cupcake — the restaurant-slash-dessert lounge opening tomorrow in Cow Hollow — goes beyond the now-ubiquitous dessert with a savory (adult-friendly) menu.
Despite the saccharine name, this is no kid’s birthday party venue. Decidedly 21-and-over fare includes pork sliders with Jack-and-Coke BBQ sauce and champagne cocktails with intriguing names like the Drunken Ballerina.
White patent leather banquettes and colored “gumball” lights create a Willy Wonka-meets-modern soda fountain effect. Succumb to the sugarcoated world with carnival-inspired desserts (candy apples, house-made cotton candy) or the inevitable frosted namesake. With out-of-the-box flavors like bubble gum and Pixie Stix, all signs point to a cupcake comeback.
