Sew Modern, So Simple

Remember the days when you made friends (rather than added them) and aspired to be mayor of your town (instead of Chipotle)?

It’s tough to maintain old-fashioned values in these tweet-infested times. But quilter and tech-savvy New Yorker Carrie Strine manages to piece it all together.

Strine reinterprets traditional techniques and patterns to give her functional art a contemporary feel. Her most modern work includes linen bed covers, throws, and place mats with DayGlo borders and crisscrossing neon orange, lime, and pink threads. Heirloom-quality pieces inspired by the Amish communities around her native Lancaster, Pennsylvania, get more subtle updates.

The quilts are well-priced, considering the craftsmanship and materials (vintage and new linens and cotton). But pot holders, coasters, felt streamers, and silk-screened pillowcases in plum, mint, and chartreuse are perfect for those more interested in padding their wallets than their beds.

Feeling inspired? Slow down and take the time to DIY.
