It’s Christmas Eve, and patience is no longer a virtue you possess. Instead of flipping your relatives the bird, dole out strong cocktails. Like this holiday-spiced Scotch concoction, courtesy of the lovely accented folks at LES pub Mary Queen of Scots (who also own Highlands).
Makes one drink
1½ oz. Scotch whisky
½ oz. lemon juice
¼ oz. allspice dram
½ oz. simple syrup
Dash of apple cider
Dash of orange bitters
Grated nutmeg (for garnish)
1. Add all ingredients and shake.
2. Pour into one of your mum’s best Waterford rocks glasses (or a plain old tumbler). Garnish with nutmeg.
3. Sip to restore sanity.

Although it’s perhaps more traditional, a family cannot live on booze alone. We’ve got just the recipe for the table: Mary Queen of Scots’s mince pies.
