Most people leave Mexico with a sunburn and a hangover.
Chefs Sam Richman (Jean Georges, The Fat Duck) and Brad McDonald (Noma, Per Se) departed with culinary ammunition for Gran Electrica, opening today in downtown Brooklyn.
The result of the duo’s recent monthlong eating odyssey: an unadulterated fiesta of Mexican dishes spanning the country’s history, regions, and levels of sophistication. Start with a garlicky Caesar salad (turns out the dish was invented in TJ) and Oaxacan garnachas (humble masa cakes topped with shredded chicken, pasillas, and refried beans).
Chili-blackened pork spare ribs come with tortillas, though we were happy to gnaw tender strips directly from the bone. Seasonal margaritas made with small-batch mezcal accompany the feast — and make the hipster Día de los Muertos wallpaper progressively more humorous.
Bringing us full circle to that sunburn and hangover.
