Though RiRi makes finding love in a hopeless place glamorous, we search more conventional spaces. Like the arms of another or, most recently, a cookie jar.
Specifically, one filled with treats from Butter + Love.
Responsible for our emotional attachment is baker Alison Walla. From her kitchen in Sunset Park, the Midwestern transplant tweaks old family recipes with fresh local herbs and fruit. The resulting gooey double-decker sandwiches are rich, refreshing, and not overly sweet.
Marionberry preserves get squished between rosemary sea salt cookies; Walla spreads strawberry jam with a balsamic reduction on marjoram butter squares. Quaint cutouts (hearts, stars, crosses) make flavors like blackberry lime or lemon vanilla bean with poppy seeds almost too dear to eat.
Walla’s spicy gingerbread mustaches, made with crystallized ginger, and shortbreads (orange cardamom, salted honey lavender, or pumpkin) stock any sweet stash tastefully.
Resistance is hopeless.
