Lingo for Locals Lexicon

Miami has a language all its own. (No, we don’t mean Spanish, people.)
aventurer
n. One who treks to Aventura, thinking she/he can go to just one store in the mall.
coconut groove
n. The rhythmless movements of frat boys trying to get jiggy at a club in the Grove.
coral gambles
n. The off chance that you can afford something at Merrick Park.
Key lime, P.I.
n. Your friend who swears she knows the location of the best Key lime pie. (Somewhere in Islamorada.)
Miami spice racket
n. The inexpensive promise that lures you to a fancy restaurant only to graft you with astronomical drink prices. (That $50 bottle sure turned this into a spice racket.)
pray to park
v. The entreaty one makes that the pay-to-park machine is not out of order.
rebel without a causeway
n. A person who ditches work early in an attempt to avoid traffic on the causeway.
sandbar
n. A cooler full of beer that you take to the beach.
sawgrass haul
n. The pile of unnecessary clothing you bought at the outlet mall.
tropical norm
n. The emerging storm that turns into just another day of morning sunshine and afternoon rain. (Mom, I don’t need to evacuate. It’s tropical norm here.)
unreal estate
n. The incredible deals being offered on Miami real estate. (The owner offered to throw in a flat-screen TV just to unload her unreal estate.)
valet picket
v. Your absolute refusal to pay $25 to park your car.
