You’re as west as it gets, so take things in a new direction.
Check in to check out Ojai Valley Inn & Spa’s new Herb Garden with luxurious minisuites, secluded soon-to-open pool and cabanas, treatment rooms for services like the abhyanga four-hand massage, and two and a half acres of cultivated grounds. The expansive resort has just about everything, but intellectuals can venture to Bart’s Books and forager groupies will find what they’re after — especially if it’s lunch — at local organic market, cafe, and CSA The Farmer & The Cook.
Sometimes your room is the view, like at Del Mar’s Les Artistes Inn, where each room is an homage to fine artists like Erté and O’Keeffe (while sister restaurant Cafe Secret down the block is an homage to breakfast) or at La Casa del Camino in Laguna Beach, where beachy brands like LSpace tricked out suites as part of the Casa Surf Project. Critique it all over chef Jeff Jackson’s Drugstore Style hamburger at The Grill & Bar on the putting green at The Lodge at Torrey Pines.
Make a nest for yourself at Niko’s Nido, a private ’60s-era, post-and-beam two-bedroom at the base of the mountain in Moonridge. For early birds, there’s coffee at The Copper Q and stacks of pancakes at Grizzly Manor Cafe. Night owls will want to wander over to The Captain’s Anchorage for steaks and a glimpse of George, the rustic bar and restaurant’s ghost.
