Two lady chefs opening a restaurant together.
Call us foodie feminists, but we’re rooting for the Frenchified fare at Gorge, Elia Aboumrad and Uyen Nguyen’s new WeHo spot, opening Monday.
Best pals who met at Parisian culinary school Ecole Lenôtre, both women enjoy distinguished fine-dining careers (Aboumrad honed her chops at Robuchon, Nguyen at Le Cirque and Savoy). Gorge, however, is a more low-key venture (think tin ceiling and wood paneling stained by the women themselves). And with its focus on traditional charcuterie (country terrine, chicken pâté), Aboumrad’s menu delivers more thrills than frills.
On wine duty, master sommelier Darius Allyn has pairing suggestions for every dish: Domaine Berthet-Rayne Cotes du Rhone Cairanne 2010 for Toulouse-style pork sausage; Domaine de St. Just Cremant de Loire Blanc for the oyster mousse. Dessert is where pastry chef Nguyen shines (her St. Honoré choux puffs had us at bonjour).
Sometimes a woman’s place is in the kitchen.
