Chinese food doesn’t always have to be a greasy, MSG-fuelled nightmare: sometimes our favourite comfort food can be fresh and healthy.
Case in point: Dumpling’s Legend, the latest restaurant from the Leong family (Leong’s Legends, Goldfish, Koi), which opened quietly last week in the heart of Chinatown. It’s serving fresh dumplings, stuffed by hand and steamed to order.
Work up an appetite watching the team of chefs in the open-plan kitchen. Make sure to order the siu long bao (pictured): these delicate dumplings are filled with chicken, spicy pork, shrimp or vegetable soup, and are best eaten while hot, with a splash of vinegar. Dim sum and Chinese classics (crispy aromatic duck, hot and sour soup, chicken in black bean sauce) are also on offer for lunch and dinner.
The no-fuss decor (seriously, they didn’t fuss over it at all) is uninspiring, but go late night (till 2:30 a.m. at the weekend) and your focus will be on the food.
