Singer Gary Clark Jr.’s powerful EP, The Bright Lights, puts a little swagger in our New York City step. He’s on tour at festivals ranging from folk, indie, and jazz to the Metallica-helmed Orion festival. Because no matter what music flag you fly, you’re gonna be a fan.
Where are you from? I am from the ATX. Austin, TX.
Describe your sound in six words or less. Psychedelic, blues, rock, funk for the soul. I know that’s seven words, but two of them are connectors/prepositions.
What’s your drink? Adult beverage? Jameson Neat. G-rated beverage? OJ.
Whom are you listening to right now? I’ve been listening to the album I’ve been working on a lot lately, trying to get it right, but other than that, some Shuggie Otis, Dr. Dre, Little Dragon, and Parliament.
What’s your preshow ritual? A little dance and a team huddle with the inner squad.
How do you entertain yourself on tour? By listening to a lot of different music and hanging with the best crew of dudes on the road possible. Each person is a source of entertainment.
Gary Clark Jr. performs Sunday, 3 p.m., at Orion Music + More, Bader Field, Atlantic City. Tickets ($90-$150) available at orionmusicandmore.com. For more information and tour dates, go to garyclarkjr.com.
