Mother Goose can have her rhymes. Our fairy tales involve food anyway. And wine country patios. And Scott Beattie’s cocktails.
Here begins the story of Goose & Gander, now enchanting Saint Helena.
Revived to its fabled glory, the 90-year-old bungalow (formerly Martini House) provides wine-tasting respite with three locales. A grand staircase leads to the newly renovated dining room with brown tufted leather booths and plentiful duck and goose paraphernalia. Enjoy Beattie’s mythic concoctions, complete with hand-cut ice and foraged ingredients, beside the stone fireplace in the basement bar; the lush garden patio promises koi pond-side dining come Memorial Day.
Chef Kelly McCown revives his haunt with rustic bar snacks (duck and chicken wings with fried pickles), apps (skillet-roasted prawns), and entrees (grilled coulotte steak).
The Goose Sundae delivers the happy ending.
The old bird would want it that way.
