There once was a boy whose favorite cake was cassava, named for the yucca root it’s made of. He later met and married a girl named Yuka.
Such is the tale of chef Kristoffer Toliao (Luce) and his wife, Yuka Ioroi (Starbelly), which comes full circle at their Outer Richmond venture, Cassava Bakery + Cafe, opening today at 8 a.m.
Enter the red door into a bright blue space with French country charm (chalkboard menus, pastry counter, wood tables) and botanical pops (hanging succulents and a terrarium-bedecked tree).
After honing his chops under Dominique Crenn, Toliao now creates breakfast (mushroom and kale quiche) and lunch (poached chicken salad panino, shredded romaine salad, cauliflower and green apple soup) fare that impresses. On the sweet side, find freshly baked cookies, brownies, and Ritual coffee.
Underground pop-up dinners resurface come April.
End of story.
