If it’s wrong to wear clothes to work that we slept in the night before, then we don’t want to be right.
But we also don’t want to be fired. That’s why we’re glad designer Wendy Nichol’s first ready-to-wear line is as downtown stylish as it is bedtime comfortable.
After receiving a sewing machine for Mother’s Day this year, the freethinking, longtime handbag designer quickly taught herself to form functional aprons. Clothing soon followed in layers.
We love the elastic-waist charmeuse never-nudes (shorts), especially when worn under the ankle-grazing night dress or gauzy collared shirt and bolero tie. A triple-ply camel silk duster coat, olive cashmere/wool jacket, and thick dark leather cowboy hats get us excited for cold weather.
Each piece is made by hand in Nichol’s Soho shop, and Red Hook-based dye genius Audrey Louise Reynolds colors them using natural pigments (roses, tumeric, minerals).
Sweet dreams are made of these.
Available at Wendy Nichol, 147 Sullivan Street, between Houston and Prince Streets (212-431-4171); online at wendynicholnyc.com, $150-$950.
