San Antonio has a helluva lot more than the Alamo to remember these days.
The River Walk recently expanded more than a mile north. Take a river taxi to see the waterway’s pretty landscaping and new art installations along the bridges and overpasses.
Pit stop at the new Pearl district, which hosts a farmers market every Saturday (9 a.m.-1 p.m.) with live music. Foodie alert: At 11 a.m. at MesAlegre (a.k.a. Joyful Table), chef Johnny Hernandez whips up a meal for those with reservations and hungry tummies.
Nearby newbie Texas Farm to Table Cafe prepares breakfast, lunch, and boxed meals with fresh local ingredients and eco packaging. Or have a ball at Dough — brick-oven pizza with luxe toppings (oak-roasted mushrooms, local heirloom tomatoes, Gorgonzola) and house-made Italian cream soda.
Rest your head at Watermark Hotel & Spa, which has a rooftop pool; the best spa in town (love the chocolate and champagne pedicure); and Pesca on the River, a lovely resto with water views and a popular tequila flight. Go the hip route at Hotel Valencia Riverwalk, checking in with mod decor and a vibrant bar scene.
In addition to a few extra pounds, plan to leave with something from Melissa Guerra culinary and home decor shop, where embroidered textiles, Guatemalan gold baubles, and carved Mexican cookware battle for your attention.
Yeah. You’ll totally surrender.
