Cleetus Friedman, the brilliant chef behind City Provisions Catering and farm dinners, is an overachiever: His new deli opened Friday in Ravenswood.
A committed ecophile, Friedman stocks his shelves almost exclusively with local fare: noodles from Pasta Puttana, Crop to Cup coffee, Quince and Apple and Rare Bird preserves, and ice cream from Nice Cream and Ruth and Phil’s. His staff knows all the farmers and suppliers, and every product has a story.
An in-house butcher oversees a deli case of meat sourced from a 200-mile radius. Cheese is made nearby (Friedman favors Dunbarton Blue, a blue-cheddar blend). His own beehives at Heritage Prairie Farm are responsible for the house-label honey.
Pick up sandwiches, sides, wine, and beer from the grab-and-go case or eat at a reclaimed wood counter and practice your locavore lingo.
