La-La Landers are a healthy bunch (bless those sunny skies). Chicagoans, relegated indoors (within a five-foot radius of the fridge) 85 percent of the year, are of the hungry kind.
Which is why formerly L.A.-based screenwriter Jeff Steinberg and animator Joe Bova decamped to the Midwest to open Cookie Bar, a retro-fitted dessert paradise that celebrates the carb.
The self-taught bakers work tirelessly to provide you with eighteen recipes daily, from old standbys like snickerdoodle and peanut butter to racier combos including oatmeal chile mango macadamia. Dairy- and gluten-free rounds abound, along with six types of chocolate chip cookies (the slow-baked variety is crunchy and caramel flavored; milk chocolate and ginger has pockets of spice).
Everything is made on-site, is preservative-free, and can be washed down with a cup of Alterra coffee — or, better yet, a glass of milk. Eat that, Hollywood.
