Sometimes the downtown bar scene makes you bristle.
Give Maxine Salon a shot — its new Braid Bar has people buzzing.
Inside the sleek, multilevel Gold Coast haunt, owner Maxine Kroll built a nook specifically for braiding. There, braid guru Cliff Freeman works his magic in 30 minutes flat (no washing required — styles hold better in unwashed hair).
Choose from the menu: herringbone (a.k.a. fishtail), French, waterfall, or cord. Each category comprises myriad options (Sienna Miller-style wraparounds, buns, high or low ponytails).
Don’t be afraid to tell Freeman exactly what you want. He likes to get creative (during our visit, he pieced together a new style inspired by a woman he’d seen in his neighborhood).
If you ask, he happily walks you through the process, so you can attempt braiding at home.
Available at Maxine Salon, 712 North Rush Street, between Superior and Huron Streets (312-751-1511 or maxinesalon.com), $30 and up.
