Dinner last Saturday didn’t happen until about 10 p.m. (par for the course in my world), so I went straight for a neighborhood favorite whose kitchen is open ’til midnight, Tuesday to Saturday: Vera. Talk about a sweet meal. Vera’s latest menu hints at spring: a light salad with green garlic vinaigrette; roasted mushrooms with mushroom cream; pimenton-flecked octopus; asparagus a la plancha with San Simon fondue; grilled calamari with crispy chickpeas; steak with salsa verde; and the best bread ever. For dessert, more sparkling rose and crema Catalana with hints of Valencia orange and vanilla bean. It was an A+ evening. — Emily Fiffer, Chicago editor
