The language of flowers is not universal.
So when Fertile on Diversey told us we deserved a bromeliad, we were terrified.
Turns out it’s a tropical plant that thrives indoors (phew) — just one of myriad options the charming Lakeview garden center offers for cold weather. The beautiful, biseasonal containers are built to survive both outdoors (until the first frost) and in.
Owner Susan Brandstetter stocks beautiful, unusual elements like lotus seedpods, exotic grasses, peppers, and melon balls. Uber-knowledgeable staff members help you choose shapes and color schemes, then plant a container for you on-site (bring your own if you’ve got one).
Tropical species (croton), dried artichoke, and spikes and grasses love the indoors — some don’t even require water; our bromeliad needs it just once a week.
Rosy by any definition.
Available at Fertile, 1646-50 West Diversey Parkway, at Paulina Street (773-472-8733 or fertileondiversey.com), $20 and up.
