Up, Up, and Away

Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane!

Nope. It’s your sweet ass, nimbly scaling suspended trapezes and silk skeins in aerial dance and fitness workshops.

The D.A.I.R. movement classes (which also include belly dance, Afro-Cuban rhythm, and free lessons for area teens) are taught in a loft-like, converted Grant Park cathedral where ropes, bars, and purple silk fabrics are suspended from reinforced rafters.

Classes begin with Pilates/yoga/stretching, then progress to basics like spotting and proper back, hand, and grip form. Next come fun moves like the star, an eye-catching contortion that just about anyone can master during the first class.

Show up in yoga-appropriate pants (rope burn is no fun) and get your mitts ready for monkey bar calluses. The payoff? Stronger muscles and improved flexibility, not to mention a svelte physique and sense of body awareness.

Otherwise known as a stunner’s high.
